The company was established in Oxford, UK in 1984 as an MBO from the Oxford Instruments Group by the Deputy Chairman, Julian Morris with some founding employees and private investors.

The privately owned company flourished and grew from organically generated profits, establishing itself as a world leader in its core business of motion capture and diversifying into visual geometry software in 2000 with its 2d3 subsidiary.  In 2005/06 2d3 diversified in to the defence market.

In April 2001, OMG plc was admitted to the London Stock Exchange AIM market.

House of Moves, a Los Angeles motion capture studio was acquired by the group in June 2004. Peak Performance, a Colorado movement analysis manufacturer was acquired in February 2005.

June 2006 saw OMG form Geospatial Vision, now rebranded as Yotta.  Yotta is providing highway authorities with complete visual records of their networks.  June also launched 2d3 technology for applications in the commercial, Government and defence industries.

OMG today serves global markets in in science, medicine, sport, engineering, gaming, film and broadcast include major hospitals and research facilities such as Guy's Hospital, Nuffield Orthopaedic and Loughborough University, engineering industry leaders including Ford Motor Company, BMW, Airbus, Caterpillar, and Toyota, and in the entertainment sector, Sony, Industrial Light and Magic, The Moving Picture Company (MPC), Sega, Nintendo, UbiSoft, EA, Square Enix and many others.
